One of Cape Town’s best known buildings, the Volunteer Drill Hall on the corner of Darling and Buitenkant Streets was internally rebuilt to accommodate the city’s main central library. The Drill Hall was used for much of its history for indoor troop drilling.
Phase I of the project included the excavation of a 40m x 20m basement below the existing floor level to accommodate a new children’s library, professional archives, storage and research areas. The ground floor houses the main public library.
