Upgrade and renovation of 5 operating theatres including 2 laminar flow theatres*, construction of new plant rooms on top of the theatres, as well as the renovation of the doctors’ and nurses’ rest rooms and changing areas and the central sterile services department (CSSD). The project was done in phases to allow the uninterrupted use of at least 3, of the 5, theatres at all times. The operating environment, including sterile integrity, remained uncompromised throughout the project. One theatre had to be underpinned to accommodate casting of a new slab on top of the theatre for additional plant.
* Laminar flow theatres work to prevent airborne bacteria from getting into open wounds, as well as removing and reducing levels of bacteria on exposed surgical instruments, surgeons and the patient’s own skin.
